The Foot Efx Foot Care Program for the Diabetic

We at Foot Efx are proud to be involved in your diabetic foot care and management. Your local Foot Efx Store provides in-service education in your community on proper foot care. Your local Foot Efx staff networks within your medical community as a complimentary resource, providing you with the highest quality diabetic foot care products in the market.

If you are a diabetic on Medicare (Part B), you may be eligible to receive at little or no cost, one pair of extra-depth comfort shoes and three pairs of custom inserts.

(Print a copy of the Certificate of Medical Necessity form, (available on our Documents page) and take it to your doctor, then bring it into your local Foot Efx store.)

We are Medicare Therapeutic Shoe Bill providers, and feature a wide range of products and services for diabetics. We have pedorthists on staff who are able to fit our customers with foot health products that meet their unique and individual needs.

Proper and early foot care and other risk-reducing practices prevent the onset of problems associated with poor circulation of the legs and feet. Diabetic shoes are designed with deep toe boxes to help promote circulation; removable insoles to accommodate diabetic inserts; mild rocker bottom soles to help with walking; and firm heel counters for support and stability.

Comfortable shoes designed for the diabetic foot make being more active possible! Foot Efx shoes, inserts, and other products are designed to improve the quality of your life.

Ask your doctor to plan an exercise program that is right for you. Walking, dancing, swimming, and bicycling are good forms of exercise that are easy on your feet.

Diabetic footwear can help prevent serious foot complications associated with:

  • Neuropathy
  • Poor circulation
  • Ulcers
  • Calluses
  • Foot deformities
  • Amputation

The Therapeutic Shoe Bill

In 1993, Congress amended Medicare statutes to provide partial reimbursement for extra-depth shoes, custom molded shoes, and shoe inserts or modifications to qualifying Medicare Part B patients with diabetes. The Center of Disease Control has estimated over 90,000 lower limb amputations due to diabetes occur annually.

Experts agree that most lower limb amputations are preventable with appropriate footwear that is properly fit.

How Patients Qualify: Patients qualify by a certifying physician diagnosing the patient with diabetes (ICD-9 diagnosis codes 250.00-250.93) and completing the "Certificate of Medical Necessity".

What is Reimbursable? Within a given calendar year the patient can receive 80% of the allowed amounts for one of the following:

  • 1 pair of depth shoes and 3 pair of inserts
  • 1 pair of custom molded shoes (with inserts)
  • 1 or more sets of Ankle/Foot Gauntlets
         * Shoe modifications can be substituted for inserts
         * Custom molded shoes are only allowed when
            depth shoe will not fit

Foot Efx Stores have a wide variety of stylish diabetic footwear and foot care products to select from.

Custom Molded Shoes

If you are on Medicare, you may be entitled to a pair of custom fit diabetic shoes and 3 pairs of heat molded inserts, at little or no out-of-pocket cost to you. Please call your local Foot Efx store for more information.
